Social Media Users
- In the 2014 Horizon Report, Johnson, Adams Becker, Estrada & Freeman (2014) reported that almost 40% of world's population is using some form of social media. Thus social media will effect the way people share, present, and interact with information. In education, the uses of social media include the sharing of news and other resources related to classroom materials (Johnson et al., 2014).
- Primary sites include Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, Tumblr, Instragram. These sites make it easy to share information with others, as relationships are the lifeblood of social media.
- Moran, Seaman & Tinti-Kane (2011) have reported that the rate of adoption of social media amongst high education educators is over 90% in the courses their are teaching or as part of their professional practice. However, as they state "It’s one thing to know of social media sites, but it’s something quite different to actually make use of these sites" (p.6).
- Moran et al., (2011) also reports that nearly two-thirds of all teaching faculty have used social media in their class sessions and 30% have posted content for students to view outside class.
